Knowledge Organization System
iGreetings eCard Asset Management System
Aligned to PLOs 1 & 4
This knowledge organization system (KOS) and the handbook guiding its use was created for LIS 60636 Knowledge Organization Structures, Systems, and Services. The project tasked me with creating a system for organizing the creative assets of a company, iGreetings, for use by their artists to access thousands of items over several decades worth of previous eCard designs and products. A faceted analysis was conducted in order to determine the best ways to structure the system through broad categories of access points in which the designers would want to search, browse, sort, and filter items to explore the eCard collection. The resulting KOS also had to account for organizing materials composed of visual, auditory, and text-based content. Different KOS tools were used in the overall design of the system, including pick lists, synonym rings, and taxonomies.
The structures implemented on the back end of the system would then support a user interface at the front end allowing artists and designers to pinpoint relevant resources. Utilization of this KOS and the technologies it supports not only gives the company greater control and understanding of their own intellectual property, but also maximizes the efficiency and creative output of their artists by saving them time and effort in finding and discovering existing assets that can be leveraged for reuse or to prevent wasteful duplication.
