A metadata application profile for postcards and postcard collections was created for LIS 60637 Metadata Architecture and Implementation. Existing systems and metadata schema for organizing and describing different types of resources were evaluated for their applicability to this particular case study and its functional requirements. In identifying the vital characteristics of the items and collections that would be necessary to capture in robust metadata descriptions, the specification reused metadata elements from a number of different standards like Dublin Core, VRA Core, and Schema.org. The use of these standards would not only enables front end systems for user discovery of resources but would also support metadata interoperability in a web-based, linked data environment. Instructions for workflows, cataloging procedures, and best practices were included, as well as recommended value vocabularies and encoding schemes.

Because of the specification's reuse of RDF-encoded standards and vocabularies, PcMAP was also implemented as an ontology. This further encouraged its usability and interoperability in linked data applications through the structuring of semantically rich, machine-processable metadata.
