Dance Quotations

Part of the evidence of this cultural process includes "quotations" from other dances in the writing of new ones.  Contra dance choreographer and caller Cary Ravitz wrote a dance called "Streetsboro Daisies," which combined elements of Becky Hill's dance "Streetsboro Reel" and Tanya Rotenberg's "Delphiniums and Daisies" (the case study for this project), on account of their similar structures at the beginning (allemande left with neighbor 1 1/2) and the end (allemande right with neighbor 1 1/2) of both dances.  His intention was to write a dance which could be used with these two other dances in a "medley," in which several different dances are strung together by a caller in a single extended dance session.  Seamless or intriguing transitions and interesting varieties of figures between dances are signs of a quality medley.
